I had some more thoughts on the gun control article.
To those who claim that gun laws won’t stop the ownership of assault weapons, I offer the following:
First, I assert that no law-abiding citizen who respects the democratic processes of our government has the slightest need for an assault weapon (Hereafter, AW.)
The way to stop the spread of such weapons is not with hit-or-miss state laws. We need a Federal law banning such weapons, and it needs real teeth in it. It should define real punishment for those convicted, and offer some other incentives. To wit:
- Minimum sentence for a person convicted of possession of an AW (to be carefully defined) is a $10,000 fine and 30 days in jail. Second offense, $100,000 fine and six months in jail. Subsequent convictions will result in a minimum of ten years in a Federal prison.
- Anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of a person possessing an AW will receive a $1000 reward.
- There will be a 30-day grace period after the law is announced, during which time AW’s may be surrendered to any law enforcement officer. A $500 bounty will be paid to the individual surrendering the weapon whether they are the owner or not.
- Exceptions can be granted to collectors or museums provided the weapon is permanently disabled.
